Who We Are?
In Tacoma, a grassroots movement is redefining how communities engage with food, sustainability, and mutual aid. Since 2015, Food is Free Tacoma has been dedicated to making fresh, homegrown produce accessible to all, regardless of income. This mission is rooted in a deep commitment to food sovereignty, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment.
Building Food Sovereignty
At its core, Food is Free Tacoma seeks to break down the barriers to accessing healthy, nutritious food. In a city where food insecurity is a reality for many, the initiative creates a network of shared abundance by encouraging residents to grow their own food and share the surplus with neighbors. This approach reduces reliance on food banks and grocery stores, fostering a sense of independence and self-reliance.
Cultivating Environmental Stewardship
Food is Free Tacoma also champions environmental sustainability through urban gardening and local food production. The organization’s flagship project, the Food Independence Gardens (FIG) program, empowers residents to cultivate their own produce in community gardens throughout Tacoma. These gardens not only provide fresh, organic vegetables and fruits but also enhance urban green spaces, support biodiversity, and reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.
Strengthening Community Bonds
Food is Free Tacoma is more than just a gardening initiative; it’s about building stronger communities. Although the FIG shares have been discontinued, the organization continues to foster connections through its gardens and other activities. These shared spaces allow neighbors to exchange gardening tips, produce, and support, creating a sense of solidarity that transcends social and economic divides.
A Vision For The Future
Looking ahead, Food is Free Tacoma remains committed to expanding its reach and impact. With plans to maintain and strengthen existing gardens and increase community participation, the organization is poised to make an even greater difference in the lives of Tacoma residents. Recent proposals, including a request for city funding to support these efforts, reflect a vision of growth and sustainability.
Hope For Food
In a world where food insecurity and environmental challenges are ever-present, Food is Free Tacoma stands as a beacon of hope. By empowering individuals to grow, share, and connect, the organization is not just feeding people—it’s nourishing the spirit of a community and cultivating a more just, sustainable future for all.

What Our Community Says
“This is a wonderful organization for our community. I have picked up boxes two weeks now and set them on the back of my pickup for my neighbors in my low income apartments to be able to pick from. This has helped bring our community together. Even bridging broken relationships in our community!!!”
