About us
Mission Statement
Food is Free Tacoma is a community-driven initiative dedicated to addressing food insecurity, building stronger neighborhood connections, and promoting sustainable living through urban agriculture and food sharing. Our mission is rooted in the belief that access to fresh, nutritious food is a fundamental human right.
Our Story
Founded in 2015 by David Thompson, Food is Free Tacoma began as a simple idea: encourage neighbors to share their excess homegrown produce to reduce food waste and build community connections. What started with a few sharing tables has grown into a dynamic network of urban gardens, programs, and educational outreach. Our work continues to evolve to meet the needs of Tacoma’s diverse and growing population.
Our Impact
Core Values
Equity: Food is a right, not a privilege. We ensure everyone in Tacoma has access to fresh, nutritious produce.
Community: Neighbors helping neighbors is the foundation of a stronger, more connected city.
Sustainability: Urban agriculture reduces waste, improves air quality, and creates greener spaces for all.
Inclusivity: Our programs support diverse communities, including low-income families, apartment dwellers, and mutual aid networks.
Looking Ahead
Food is Free Tacoma is committed to growing our impact by cultivating more produce, engaging more community members, and championing sustainable practices in urban settings. Through our work, we aim to inspire other cities and communities to embrace food sharing and urban agriculture.
